According to national regulations, it is illegal to sell raw milk. Many people think that this “natural” and “unprocessed” raw milk is “safe” and “healthy”. Why does the government have to prohibit it?

First, does drinking raw milk have health benefits? In the FDA's official website, the answer to this question is simple and crude - "no." The FDA comprehensively summarized the scientific literature and found no credible benefits.

Second, is it really "safer" to drink raw milk? According to the data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1987 to 2010, there were 133 food safety accidents caused by drinking raw milk or eating raw milk products from 1987 to 2010, resulting in 2,659 secondary illnesses, of which 269 required hospitalization and 3 deaths. , 6 stillbirths and 2 abortions. FDA said that not all accidents will be reported and actual accidents will be more than recorded.

Third, if you buy raw milk, buy it home and boil it before drinking it? This can kill pathogenic bacteria and increase safety, but it is not safe. In commercial milk production, cold chain storage or other antibacterial measures are also used from milking to sterilization. If the cow is completely healthy, the problem is not great. If the cow is infected with pathogenic bacteria, heating may not be effective if bacteria produce toxins during the process of being squeezed into heat.

Fourth, direct contact with dairy cows poses a risk of Brucellosis. Due to the reputation of the "ten thousand ranch model", a relevant animal husbandry investigation revealed that 37 cows were infected with Brucella, and the farmer has been diagnosed with brucellosis every year. The incidence rate of the disease is relatively large in relation to the hygiene conditions of animal breeding, and the incidence of disease in the areas with poor health monitoring at the breeding sites is relatively high. Individual dairy farmers may not regularly conduct quarantine inspections on dairy cows, and there is no way to know if they are infected. Pulling cows into the urban area poses security risks to the surrounding population.
