RNA virus? Not heard. However, hepatitis C virus, HIV, SARS virus, Ebola virus, bird flu virus, influenza virus... must be very good. They all belong to RNA virus. The innate immune response is the body's first line of defense against viruses. However, how the immune system "clears" the virus is still a mystery in the academic world. A recent study by the Zhu Haizhen team of Institute of Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, School of Biological Sciences, Hunan University, discovered a working mechanism that could be immune to RNA viruses. The related results were recently published in the International Journal of Virology, Journal of Virology.
"The fight against the virus can be seen as a fight between the immune system and the virus. First, the pattern recognition receptors RIG-I or MDA5 inside the host cell (the virus invading cells) act as 'scouts' and they identify the invasion. After the virus, the invasion signal was transmitted to the 'combatant' MAVS and allowed to clear the virus under the TRIM21 commander's instructions, said Zhu Haizhen.
Their study found that when the "commander" TRIM21 is highly expressed, it will prompt MAVS to enhance its ability to recruit "another series of combatants" kinase TBK1, and ultimately enhance the immune response and eliminate the virus. Conversely, when TRIM21 is underexpressed, the ability of MAVS to recruit TBK1 is weakened, weakening the immune system and the virus cannot be effectively eliminated. This shows that TRIM21 can promote the clearance of virus by effective regulation of MAVS and innate immune response. The discovery of this mechanism is expected to find drug targets for chronic viral infections and promote drug development.
