US research team found "double-edged sword" liver stem cells

Release date: 2018-04-09

A research team in the United States has recently discovered a "double-edged sword" liver stem cell that produces new liver cells when the liver is damaged, but this cell overdose may induce liver cancer cell production.

Researchers at Stanford University in the United States reported in a new issue of Nature that liver cells that express high levels of telomerase in mice can help organs regenerate after normal liver cell metabolism or damage.

Telomerase is a protein associated with anti-aging. Every time the normal cells divide, the telomeres at the ends of the chromosomes become shorter, and the telomeres are shortened to a certain extent, and the cells lose their proliferative ability and die. But telomerase can synthesize telomeres to help fight aging.

Recent studies have found that about 3% to 5% of mouse liver cells are high-level telomerase-derived liver stem cells that proliferate and rapidly produce new liver cells after normal liver cells are metabolized or damaged.

Lin Shengda, the first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, told Xinhua News Agency that they had let the liver cells expressing telomerase in mice die in the experiment, and then injected the chemicals in the liver with the control mice, and found that they could not express the end. The liver damage of granzyme mice was more severe than that of the control group with normal expression of telomerase.

Studies have shown that although high-level expression of telomerase-derived liver stem cells can help repair damage, it is also a "double-edged sword". If genetic mutations lead to high levels of telomerase expression, it may induce the formation of liver cancer cells.

Lin Shengda said that the molecular mechanisms by which healthy stem cells and cancer cells regulate telomerase expression are different, and these molecular mechanisms can be used as targets to develop new therapies in the future.
