This further shows that environmental factors are an important cause of autism.
The study, conducted jointly by the American Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Caroline Medical School of Sweden, was published in the journal Nature Communications.
By analyzing the deciduous teeth of children, the researchers traced the intake of trace elements in early childhood development. The researchers compared autistic children with their twin siblings and normal twins and found that children with autism had lower levels of zinc intake in their mother's stomach for the last 3 months, from the mother's stomach to months after birth. The intake of magnesium is lower and the lead intake is higher. Lead is toxic to nerves, and magnesium and zinc are essential trace elements.
The data also show that certain trace element levels in the first few months of life can predict the severity of the disease in children with autism after 8 to 10 years.
Autism is a disease caused by abnormal brain development, mainly characterized by language barriers, communication difficulties, lack of normal social skills, and repeated stereotypes. The incidence of statistics in developed countries is 1%-2%, and the incidence of boys is significantly higher than that of girls.
The etiology of autism is still unclear. It is generally believed that genetic factors and environmental factors are combined. At present, the research on environmental factors is relatively insufficient. The new study takes advantage of a feature of deciduous teeth in the early stages of development - about a new layer every week, the composition of which reflects the amount of trace elements in the baby's body, just like the annual rings of the formation and trees.
Researchers say that the scientific community in the future will need a larger study to determine when various trace elements have the greatest impact on the risk of disease, the relationship between intake and risk. Researchers hope that the results will be used to guide the nutritional intake of pregnant women and babies in the future to reduce the risk of autism.
