The raising of meat dogs has emerged as a promising industry in recent years. As living standards have improved, traditional livestock and poultry meats are no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand for diverse and nutritious food options. In response, health-conscious and flavor-driven foods have gained popularity, and dog meat is now increasingly consumed in certain regions. From a feeding efficiency perspective, one meat dog typically consumes between 300 to 500 grams of feed per day, with approximately 2 to 3 kilograms of compound feed yielding 1 kilogram of meat. The cost of the feed is under 2 yuan per kilogram, while the profit margin on each kilogram of market-ready dog meat can reach up to 8 yuan, making it a highly profitable venture. With strong market demand, there's little concern about sales in the short term.
To raise meat dogs successfully, breed selection is crucial. While all dogs can technically be raised for meat, not all breeds are suitable. For instance, pet dogs are generally too small or expensive to be considered for consumption. However, other breeds—especially those bred for meat—should be evaluated based on their growth rate, ability to thrive on roughage, ease of management, lean meat content, and meat quality. Many breeding operations now use crossbreeding techniques, such as combining wolf dogs with local breeds. Although wolf dogs are large and robust, they often have excessive fat and a strong, gamey odor. On the other hand, local "stupid" dogs may produce high-quality meat but grow slowly and lack economic viability.
Currently, among native breeds, the Tibetan Mastiff from the plateau and the Mongolian Oak from the steppe stand out for their size, rapid growth, and hardiness. These breeds have adapted to harsh environments, including high altitudes, extreme temperature fluctuations, and unpredictable weather, which have enhanced their disease resistance and ability to survive on minimal feed. When crossbred, these two varieties produce offspring that combine the best traits: fast growth, good health, easy care, and superior meat quality. Since they are mainly fed plant-based diets, the meat is tender, flavorful, and free from strong odors, leading to excellent breeding results.
