The meat dog industry has emerged as a new and promising sector in recent years. As living standards improve, traditional livestock and poultry meats are no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand for diverse and high-quality food options. In response, health-conscious and flavor-focused foods have gained popularity, and dog meat has gradually become a sought-after option in certain regions. The feeding efficiency of meat dogs is quite impressive: one dog typically consumes about 300 to 500 grams of feed per day, and it takes roughly 2 to 3 kilograms of compound feed to produce 1 kilogram of meat. With the cost of compound feed being under 2 yuan per kilogram, and a profit margin of around 8 yuan per kilogram of meat, this business model offers significant economic potential. Given the strong market demand, there's little concern about sales in the short term.
To raise meat dogs effectively, breed selection is crucial. While all dogs can technically be raised for meat, not all breeds are suitable. Purebred show dogs, for example, are too small and expensive to be considered for consumption. Instead, the ideal meat dog should grow quickly, tolerate roughage, be easy to manage, and produce lean, tender, and flavorful meat. Many breeding operations now use crossbreeding between wolf dogs and local breeds. Although wolf dogs are large, they often have excessive fat and a strong odor, making them less desirable. Local "stupid" dogs, on the other hand, offer better meat quality but grow slowly and are less economically viable.
Currently, among native breeds, the Tibetan Mastiff and the Mongolian Oak are the most preferred for meat production. These breeds have evolved in harsh environments—high altitudes, extreme temperature fluctuations, and unpredictable climates—which have given them strong disease resistance and the ability to thrive on minimal resources. When these two breeds are crossbred, the resulting offspring inherit the best traits from both parents: fast growth, good feed conversion, and excellent meat quality. Since they are mainly fed plant-based diets, their meat is tender, juicy, and free from any unpleasant odors, leading to high breeding efficiency and profitability.
