British expert research shows: stay away from venous thrombosis and prevent it

Release date: 2007-10-17

Recent research led by British experts, including Professor A. Jay Kakkar, has highlighted the importance of extending anticoagulant therapy beyond the standard 10-day period for patients at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Their findings suggest that prolonging preventive treatment to five weeks significantly reduces the risk of VTE in emergency patients compared to shorter regimens. This discovery has important implications for improving patient outcomes and reducing complications.

Venous thromboembolism occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein, potentially blocking blood flow and leading to serious health issues. It can manifest in various forms, with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) being the most common. These conditions often develop silently, making early detection challenging.

Patients who have suffered a stroke are particularly vulnerable to VTE due to reduced mobility and other underlying factors. In Europe and the U.S., up to 80% of cases go undiagnosed because symptoms are subtle or absent. Moreover, less than half of all fatal pulmonary embolism cases are diagnosed before death, highlighting the high risk and difficulty in identifying this condition. This lack of awareness contributes to its reputation as a "silent killer."

In China, the situation is equally concerning. Although awareness of VTE has increased over the years, the incidence remains high. According to data from 2005, nearly 0.16% of hospitalized patients were affected by VTE, while the rate of DVT among those undergoing major orthopedic surgery exceeded 40%. These figures indicate that VTE is a growing public health issue in China, just as it is globally.

As an international health challenge, VTE affects multiple medical fields, including cardiology, neurology, nephrology, vascular surgery, orthopedics, and oncology. Raising awareness, implementing early prevention strategies, and ensuring standardized treatment are crucial steps in combating this silent but dangerous condition. ——Midi Medical Network
