Stingrays are often raised in polyculture systems alongside other aquatic species in ponds. One common approach is to directly rear 3-5 cm long stingray fry in these ponds, allowing them to grow naturally without separate feeding. There are two main methods for raising stingrays in traditional fish ponds. The first involves stocking the pond with some sturgeon or similar species, and then introducing stingray fry that are over 3 cm in length—approximately 100-150 per mu (about 0.067 hectares)—without additional feeding. The second method is used in ponds without such stock, where 500-600 stingrays of more than 3 cm in length per mu are introduced. In recent years, some farmers have successfully integrated stingray cultivation into shrimp ponds. Green shrimp fry serve as an ideal food source for stingrays. After raising stingrays, the size and quality of the shrimp produced during the culture period can be significantly improved. In some cases, multiple generations of shrimp may even emerge from the same pond, enhancing overall productivity. However, it's important to maintain a strict stocking density of no more than 100 stingrays per acre to avoid overcrowding and ensure healthy growth. Pond conditions should be carefully managed. Water must be clean and free from pollutants. Ponds should have effective escape prevention measures in place. The pH should remain between 7 and 8.5, and dissolved oxygen levels should stay above 4 mg/L. A natural supply of food sources such as plankton, water silk, small fish, and aquatic insects is essential for supporting stingray growth. Regarding stocking density, it should be adjusted based on available feed. In commercial fish ponds using artificial feed, about 300 stingrays per acre can be stocked, leading to a harvest of 10-15 kg of stingrays. In ponds without carp or other fish, 500-600 stingrays per mu can be raised, yielding 20-30 kg of stingrays. It’s crucial that the stingrays are at least 3 cm long before being stocked. Daily management is key to success. Maintaining good water quality is essential, with dissolved oxygen levels consistently above 4 mg/L. Escape prevention should be prioritized, and care must be taken when using medications to treat other fish diseases, as these could negatively impact stingray health. Regular monitoring and proper husbandry practices will help ensure a successful and sustainable stingray farming operation.
