The City of H7N9 Flu Cases in China

Recently, there have been cases of H7N9 influenza in many places across the country, with a relatively high number of cases in Guangdong and Fujian. Since January of this year, Zhejiang Province has diagnosed many cases. According to epidemiological surveys, these patients have live birds and their environmental exposure history. Recently, the Municipal Center for Disease Control issued a reminder that with the approaching of traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival, many people still have the habit of purchasing live poultry for festivals. To avoid infection, the public should stay away from live birds.

According to experts from the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this year's epidemic is characterized by a wide range of geographical spread, mainly in rural areas, and a clear history of bird contact before the onset of the disease. Since the beginning of winter this year, the H7N9 epidemic has presented new features of geographical dispersion and rural cases. The source of infection is from the villages or homes where birds are kept, and poultry from the township farmers' markets.

According to the “Administrative Measures on the Management of Live Poultry Transaction in Zhejiang Province” implemented on July 1, 2014, the main urban area of Hangzhou has permanently closed the live poultry market, and slaughtered at fixed-point and whitelisted. The urban management department has also stepped up inspections and banned the peddling transactions of street vendors outside the live poultry trading market. These measures have played a key role in controlling the H7N9 flu. However, at present, there are still a few rural villages that still have live poultry sales. There are also street vendors selling live birds in urban areas, which has become an important hidden danger.

The Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention appeals to the public if they find illegal live bird trade, floating live poultry stalls, and private sale and purchase in the main city area. However, the public does not have to panic too much. The H7N9 virus is sensitive to the outside environment. In the high temperature of 100 degrees Celsius, it can be killed in 1 minute; when it is heated in 70 degrees Celsius for several minutes, the virus can be killed, and the cooked food is basic. Without influence, the public can feel safe to eat.
