Remember the days when I had just two kids? When life felt a bit less chaotic and I actually had time to wash my hair and dream about room designs? Yeah, those times are starting to blur in my memory. Now, with three little ones running around, I barely have time to catch my breath, let alone style a proper nightstand. But I'm thrilled to share one of the creative projects I managed to pull off before baby number three came along. Yes, I promise I'll share more updates soon… once I figure out how to nap without waking up everyone else!
I’ve always been a fan of simplicity in design, and when it came to our master bedroom and nursery, I knew I wanted something sleek and modern. Bright white, crisp lines—basically, the perfect bedside table. Problem was, I couldn’t find exactly what I had in mind. I spent hours scrolling through websites, only to discover similar pieces priced way higher than I could afford. One particular table caught my eye, but it was the wrong size for our space, and the price tag was close to $1,000 per piece. Ouch. No thanks. So, I decided to get crafty and try building my own. Or, at least, convince my husband to help me build it. We started researching materials, tools, and costs, and honestly, it seemed like a lot of work. Then, one evening, it hit me—I should check out IKEA’s Expedit shelves. They were affordable, easy to customize, and, most importantly, fit perfectly in our space. Score!
Chris assembled the shelves over the weekend while I lounged around (well, maybe not lounged, but you get the idea). It took him all of five minutes to put them together using just three pieces from the kit. At first, he worried about stability since these weren’t full shelving units, but four months later, they’re still standing strong. The fact that they’re wedged between the wall and our bed probably helps—they don’t budge an inch. We even considered adding L-brackets for reinforcement, but honestly, they’ve held up beautifully without any extra support.
Can you spot which nightstand belongs to me?
To style our nightstands, I followed Emily Henderson’s classic rules:
1. **Something tall**—like lamps.
2. **Something solid and horizontal**—books or a tray work great.
3. **Something sculptural**—to balance everything out. I think I need to tweak this rule a bit more, but I love the overall vibe right now.
Eventually, I’d love to add some colorful prints or artwork to give the space a pop of personality. For now, though, I’m really happy with the clean aesthetic we’ve achieved. Minimalism isn’t just trendy—it makes me feel calmer and more organized. And trust me, in a house full of toddlers, that’s a huge win.
Speaking of art, have you ever seen paintings made by elephants? Turns out, they’re surprisingly talented! Chris and I stumbled upon some incredible elephant artwork during our travels in Thailand. We even have pictures of the adorable creatures using their trunks to create these masterpieces. Later, we found similar pieces at a quaint shop in Chicago and brought them home. They’re not originals from our trip, but they remind us of those unforgettable moments abroad.
Wishing you all a fantastic weekend, friends.
