Flower heatstroke

Summer is a season of extremes—hot and rainy, it's the peak growing period for some flowers, while others go into dormancy. To ensure your summer flowers thrive, proper care is essential. First, watering and fertilizing are crucial. In summer, high temperatures cause water to evaporate quickly, so it's best to water your plants once or twice daily, ideally in the early morning and late evening. For flowering plants that grow actively during this time, such as jasmine, pittosporum, and asparagus ferns, you can apply a diluted fertilizer every two weeks. However, for flowers that go dormant in summer, like clivia, begonias, and geraniums, it's important to control soil moisture. Overly dry conditions can cause bulbs to shrink, while excessive moisture can lead to root rot. During this period, it's best to stop fertilizing altogether. Next, shading and cooling are necessary. Some heat-sensitive plants, like thistle and bamboo jellyfish, should be placed in shaded areas or under a covered patio to avoid direct sunlight. You can also mist them with water to help lower the temperature around them. Heavy rains can wash away nutrients from the soil, so it's wise to protect your plants from downpours. After it rains, make sure to drain any excess water from the pots to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Lastly, summer is also a time when diseases and pests are more common. Fungal issues like black spot, powdery mildew, and sooty mold often appear, while insects such as spider mites, aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars can infest your plants. As soon as you notice any signs of disease, remove the affected leaves and dispose of them properly—burning is recommended. You may also need to apply appropriate treatments to prevent further spread. Regular inspection and timely action are key to keeping your garden healthy throughout the season.
