It’s just a couple of days until Christmas (can you believe it? Only a couple of days left!), so I thought I’d share this super cute gift idea we came up with for the kids' teachers this year. Honestly, I needed something quick and easy to make since we needed nine gifts… NINE! And let’s face it, every teacher loves something that helps them get through their day, especially a caffeine boost. One of Brayden’s teachers loved using her new mug to write sweet notes to her husband every morning. Isn’t that adorable?
I absolutely adore these mugs, and I might have accidentally made an extra one for myself. These chalkboard mugs are surprisingly easy to create, and the best part is you can write personalized messages on them every single day. They'd make a fantastic gift for any coffee lover, teacher, parent, or even a set of four for a family that would appreciate them!
So, here’s how to make them yourself:
Supplies: Plain mugs, rubbing alcohol, black chalkboard paint, painter’s tape, and a small brush.
Step 1// First things first, clean the area you plan to paint thoroughly using rubbing alcohol. Just dampen a cloth and give the mug a good wipe-down. Little helpers are always welcome, but not necessary!
Step 2// Next, use painter’s tape to mark off the section you want to paint. I suggest painting the bottom half of the mug and leaving the rim untouched—chalkboard paint isn’t food-safe, so keeping it away from the lip is a smart move.
Step 3// Now, start painting. It’s better to apply about three light coats instead of two heavy ones, letting each layer dry for 1-2 hours. Don’t worry—it’ll look patchy at first, but trust me, it’ll cover up beautifully!
Step 4// Once you’ve applied your final coat, carefully peel off the tape before it dries completely. Use a sharp knife or small brush to tidy up any edges if needed. Let the mugs dry overnight. Then, place them in a cool oven, turn the heat up to 400°F, and bake for 40 minutes. After cooling, they’re ready to be filled with all sorts of goodies!
For ours, we included a Christmas card, hot chocolates, chocolate candies, marshmallows, and a piece of chalk. You could also add a gift card to their favorite coffee shop, flavored syrups, instant coffee packets, or anything else they’d enjoy!
Of course, while I was wrapping everything up, I couldn’t resist making myself a cup of chai tea with extra marshmallows. Is that too selfish of me?
