I often think about my grandfather and how much he had to overcome just to adapt to a new world. Growing up in a one-room schoolhouse, surrounded by kids from immigrant families like his own, taught him early on the value of learning and resilience. His parents, along with many others, had come to America seeking opportunity, but communication was tough. They barely spoke English, and this cultural gap only became clearer during my grandfather's teenage years. That’s when scouts from professional baseball teams started showing interest in him because of his incredible talent. But despite his potential, his Slovak-speaking father wouldn’t hear of letting anyone take advantage of his son. It was a fiercely protective stance that shaped who my grandfather would become.

Years later, at the age of 21, he found himself drafted into World War II. Those experiences profoundly changed him, bringing both hardship and wisdom. He returned home carrying stories of struggle and sacrifice, along with an unshakable appreciation for freedom and family. His heart remained deeply connected to the country he fought for—and to the values that made it worth defending.

Even though he’s no longer here, his legacy lives on through his words and actions. One of my favorite quotes from his autobiography captures the essence of what he endured:

“During the Battle of the Bulge, our general said, ‘The Nazis won’t surrender.’ It was freezing cold, and we only had those thin sleeping bags, but somehow we didn’t feel the chill. We were sweating—not from the weather, but from fear. And it was fear, combined with being far from home, that kept us going.”

To all those who gave everything so that we could live freely in a land we proudly call home, thank you. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten.

I hope everyone enjoyed a meaningful Memorial Day weekend filled with gratitude and reflection.
