Summer heat can be intense and significantly impact the normal growth of pigs. To help pigs gain weight more effectively during the summer, it's beneficial to adjust their feeding schedule by moving most of the feeding time to nighttime. This is because the night offers cooler temperatures and fewer disturbances, allowing pigs to rest longer and digest food more efficiently, which supports better weight gain.
The first step is to adjust the feeding times. Instead of feeding during the day, you can feed pigs at 7 PM, 11 PM, and 4 AM—three times a night. During the day, avoid feeding them. However, you can provide them with 0.5% saline solution at 10 AM and 3 PM to keep them hydrated and balanced.
Secondly, it's important to control the amount of feed based on the pig's weight. When pigs weigh around 35 kg, they should receive 2 kg of feed per day along with 10 kg of salted water. For pigs between 35–60 kg, increase the feed to 2.75 kg daily and provide 15 kg of salted water. Once they exceed 60 kg, feed them 3.5 kg of feed and 17.5 kg of salted water each day. With this method, pigs weighing 90 kg can gain about 0.75 kg per day.
In addition to adjusting feeding times and quantities, it's essential to manage pests like mosquitoes. At night, you can use mosquito coils or cover the pigpen with gauze treated with insect repellent to prevent bites, which can stress the animals and hinder growth.
Another important aspect is maintaining hygiene. Regularly flush the feeding equipment and clean the pig house every morning. This helps prevent disease and ensures a healthy environment for the pigs. You can also add a small amount of oxytetracycline to their feed periodically to support their immune system and overall health.
By following these strategies, you can optimize pig growth during the hot summer months, ensuring they remain healthy and gain weight efficiently. It’s all about adapting feeding practices, managing the environment, and keeping things clean and organized.
