The best time to feed pigs in summer

Summer heat can be intense and significantly impact the normal growth of pigs. To help pigs gain weight more effectively during the summer, it's beneficial to adjust their feeding schedule from the traditional daytime routine to a nighttime feeding strategy. This is because the night hours are cooler and less disturbed, allowing pigs to rest for over 18 hours after eating, which supports better weight gain. The first step is to adjust the feeding times. You can feed pigs at 7 PM, 11 PM, and 4 AM, making it three meals per night. Avoid feeding them during the day. Instead, offer them 0.5% saline solution at 10 AM and 3 PM. This helps keep them hydrated and comfortable in the heat. Secondly, it's important to carefully control the amount of feed given. When pigs weigh around 35 kg, they should receive 2 kg of feed per day along with 10 kg of salted water. For pigs between 35–60 kg, increase the feed to 2.75 kg daily and provide 15 kg of salted water. Once they exceed 60 kg, feed them 3.5 kg per day with 17.5 kg of salted water. Using this method, pigs weighing 90 kg can gain approximately 0.75 kg per day. In addition to adjusting feeding times and portions, it’s crucial to protect pigs from mosquitoes. At night, you can burn mosquito coils in the pigpen or use gauze wrapped with insect repellent drugs to create a barrier against pests. This helps prevent diseases and discomfort that could hinder growth. Lastly, it's recommended to administer a proper dose of oxytetracycline regularly to support their health. Make sure to clean the feeding equipment thoroughly each morning and maintain a clean environment in the pig house. These measures not only improve hygiene but also contribute to better weight gain during the hot summer months. By combining these strategies, farmers can effectively manage pig growth and ensure healthier livestock throughout the season.
