Bioniks launches "Superhero" series 3D printed prosthetics in Pakistan

Release date: 2016-11-24

OFweek3D Print Network News also remembers the 3D printed superhero theme prosthesis launched by Open Bioniks for the OFweek3D printing network? Now, Bioniks from Pakistan has launched a similar event, hoping to bring the concept of “real superheroes” to everyone. And a 5-year-old child from Pakistan, Mir Bayyan, has become the first child in the country to get a 3D printed superhero prosthesis.

According to the OFweek3D printing network, Mir Bayyan came from Pakistan. After receiving the "Iron Man" 3D printed prosthesis, he was very happy. The family seemed to feel that his self-confidence was slowly recovering. “We see that the acquisition of 3D printed prostheses around the world is very easy, but it is rarely seen in Pakistan. Therefore, we hope to change this situation.” Anas Niaz and Ovais Qarashi said, “We see what we see. People's needs, plus some whimsy, launched Bioniks."

However, they also admitted that Bayyan's first 3D printed prosthesis was not perfect, even quite rough. To this end, Bioniks launched a crowdfunding campaign on ZingoHub and raised $5,000. With the support of this funding, the team continued to conduct more in-depth research and development.

"We gave them not only a prosthetic but also a tool to improve self-confidence," Oarashi said. "Not only in Pakistan, children who have been amputated all over the world are suffering enormous pain, and self-confidence is facing innovation." Therefore, although Bayyan received a relatively simple 3D printed prosthesis, the 3D printed prosthesis was incomparable to the developed countries such as the United States, but it also brought him great happiness.

Now, Bioniks hopes to expand the scale of production so that children can choose the basic design, then choose their favorite superhero, and then customize a "superhero" prosthesis. It is believed that with the continuous improvement of 3D printing software and hardware, 3D printing will be able to provide customized prosthetics that cannot be achieved by traditional manufacturing methods.

The primary focus of Bioniks' current focus is on Pakistani children, who will continue to refine their relatively simple designs, which means they can deliver 3D printed prostheses at a lower unit cost. With the help of the open source community and the open source community, this relatively simple concept will certainly grow.
