The US Federal Parcel Service (UPS) has made another big step forward in the drone delivery business on Friday. As the world's largest maritime transportation company, UPS has partnered with drone manufacturer CyPhy Works to test the drone delivery function. Through this test, UPS successfully used a drone to transport a batch of medical supplies from Beverly, Massachusetts to Children's Island on the Atlantic coast. Children's Island is located about 3 miles from the Atlantic coast and there is no road to the outside world.
The test was designed to investigate the reliability and feasibility of using drones for timely delivery. In this test, UPS delivered a medical respirator to Children's Island via a drone. However, at the time, the island did not actually need such medical equipment urgently.
UPS began investing in drone start-up CyPhy Works last fall to help the startup launch a commercial version of the Continuous Airborne Detective and Communications (PARC) drone. This drone was originally designed to help the US military monitor and collect intelligence. However, UPS is considering using this drone for commercial purposes. The 10-pound drone can carry a 6-pound parcel across the sky, with a maximum speed of 40 miles per hour (about 35 knots) in headwind conditions.
This test on Friday was not the first attempt by UPS to enter the field of drones. In fact, UPS has used drones in warehouses to measure data such as the height of the cargo rack to clarify the available storage space. In addition, UPS also invested in the robotic startup Zipline in the early summer of this year, and announced plans to use drones to deliver blood and vaccines to the blood transfusion center in Rwanda. In the view of UPS, if it is delivered to a remote rural medical center, the speed of the drone will definitely be much faster than other ground transportation methods. UPS's drone delivery test in Rwanda is expected to begin in October this year.
