New implantable collagen polymer lenses help you successfully correct myopia!

Release date: 2015-12-22

According to a study published online December 12 in Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology, implantable collagen polymer lens (ICL) implants can effectively correct myopia.

Jong S. Lee from Busan University in South Korea and his teammates conducted a retrospective observational study involving 281 eyes of 145 myopic patients. All patients underwent ICL implantation and were followed for at least 5 years (87 ± 18.9 months).

The researchers found that the final LogMAR mean of uncorrected and corrected long-distance vision were 0.02 ± 0.19 and -0.12 ± 0.13, respectively. The mean efficacy index was 1.04 ± 0.32 and the mean safety index was 1.20 ± 0.26. The average equivalent spherical degree has been reduced from -8.74 ± 2.27 diopters (D) to -0.58 ± 0.72D. Postoperative predictability is evident, with approximately 69.8% to 87.2% of patients with postoperative refraction within 0.5D and 1.0D, respectively. The mean change in postoperative delirium ranged from 2.53 ± 0.6 to 2.00 ± 0.7. 2.1% of the eyes developed cataracts, and endothelial cells lost an average of 7.8 ± 8.3%. In general, 0.7% of the eyes will have an increase in intraocular pressure, which requires the exchange of lenses of different sizes.

"ICL implantable, an effective and safe procedure for correcting myopia, has been found to be highly predictable and highly stable in long-term follow-up observations," the authors write. “Slight nearsight changes associated with sputum changes and the formation of cataracts should be further evaluated!”
