U.S. cultivates transgenic disease-resistant grapes

American scientists have implanted a gene from the silkworm into the grapes to produce genetically modified grapes that can resist Pierce's disease. Grape Pierce disease is a disease caused by bacterial infection. It infects the xylem of the vines, resulting in poor water transport and death of vines. There is currently no effective method to deal with this disease. According to the British "New Scientist" magazine report, Dennis Gray and others of the University of Florida in the United States have put a gene of silkworm into the grape and discovered that the gene can control the production of a protein called antimicrobial peptide, which is attached to the disease of Pierce's disease. The bacterial cell membrane, and then enter the bacteria inside, killing bacteria. According to the researchers, the new genes mainly play a role in the xylem of the vines, and there are fewer antibacterial peptides produced in fruits and other parts. They are trying to make genes work only in the xylem, avoiding antimicrobial peptides entering the human food chain through grape fruit and preventing new food safety concerns.
