Scientific name: *Rhapis multifida* Burr.
Family: Palmaceae
Common Name: Jinshan Brown
Morphological Characteristics:
The plant features clustered stems that grow up to 1–1.5 meters in height. Its leaves are pinnate, measuring approximately 18–25 cm in length, and are palmately lobed with 25–35 narrow, linear segments. The central and lateral lobes are the widest, ranging from 1.5–2.2 cm wide, and each has two prominent longitudinal flat veins. The remaining lobes have a single longitudinal vein. The edges of the lobes are slightly serrated, giving the leaves a delicate, intricate appearance. The petiole (leaf stalk) has a slightly serrated margin and is covered with dense yellowish hairs.
The fruit is oval-shaped, about 1 cm long, and slightly fleshy. The flowering season typically occurs between March and April, making it a popular choice for ornamental gardens during early spring.
Origin:
This species is native to southern Yunnan, China, and has been introduced to various regions in South China and Southeast Asia. It thrives in warm, humid climates and is often cultivated in botanical gardens and private collections.
Growth Habits:
*Rhapis multifida* prefers moderate light conditions and should be protected from both prolonged low light and intense direct sunlight. Overuse of nitrogen-rich fertilizers can lead to weak growth, so it's best to use balanced fertilizers. Maintaining a certain level of humidity in the air is also essential for its healthy development.
Breeding Methods:
This plant can be propagated through rhizome division or by seed. The germination type is classified as "long-range leaf sheath," and the first set of leaves emerges as entire (non-lobed), gradually developing into the characteristic lobed structure as the plant matures.
Usage and Ornamental Value:
Known for its elegant appearance, *Rhapis multifida* is highly valued for its fine, well-proportioned leaf lobes and graceful form. It is ideal for garden cultivation in southern China, where it adds a touch of natural beauty. Additionally, it is commonly used in large-scale bonsai displays due to its compact size and attractive foliage.
