Fringe Night Clove

Scientific name: Cestrum nocturnum L.

Family: Solanaceae

Common Names: Night Blooming Cereus, Night Scented Geranium, Night Fragrant Flower, and Night Orchid Incense

The plant belongs to the Solanaceae family, commonly known as the nightshade family. It is an evergreen shrub that thrives in warm climates.

Origin:

Native to the tropics of the Americas, this plant is widely cultivated in the southern regions of China and is often grown in pots in northern areas.

Name Origin:

Known for its evening fragrance, it remains green throughout the year. Its name comes from the fact that it blooms at night, releasing a sweet scent when the wind blows.

Morphological Characteristics:

The branches are hairy and weak, with opposite leaves that are ovate or broadly ovate in shape. The leaves have a heart-shaped base and are covered with short hairs. The stems are long and thin, ending in a small tip. The flowers grow in clusters, are yellow-green, and emit a strong fragrance, especially at night.

The calyx has five lobes, and the corolla has a short tube. The flowering period lasts from May to September, and the fruit is cone-shaped, pointed, and can reach up to 7-8 cm in length.

Growth Habits:

This plant prefers tropical climates. It is hardy and easy to grow. To survive the winter, it requires temperatures above 10°C to prevent leaf drop. In spring, it can be placed on balconies or in courtyards. Regular application of diluted liquid fertilizer helps promote growth, and during the flowering season, consistent feeding ensures abundant blooms. The plant grows quickly and densely, so pruning is recommended to maintain shape and control flowering. From July to September, it produces beautiful flowers.

Propagation is typically done through cuttings. Softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings can be used, with the most successful results coming from semi-lignified branches. Cut about 10 cm from the tips, remove the lower 2–8 leaves, and make a horseshoe-shaped cut at the base. Place the cuttings in a glass bottle filled with water, changing the water every 5–7 days. After 20–30 days, new roots will develop, and the cutting will become a healthy seedling. Spring cuttings can bloom in autumn, while autumn cuttings may flower the following year.

Breeding Method:

The most common method is through stem propagation. Due to its high rooting ability, two or more plants can be propagated from the root part of the parent plant. This technique produces strong seedlings, but the number of plants that can be produced is limited.

Uses:

This plant is ideal for garden planting and potted cultivation. Its fragrant flowers provide a pleasant aroma and can be enjoyed visually. Additionally, it is edible and has medicinal properties.
