Japan Uses Chloroplast Transgenic Technology to Promote Plant Growth

Japanese experts have succeeded in using chloroplast transgenic technology to increase the photosynthesis capacity of plants in recent days, which has greatly shortened their growth cycle. Chloroplast DNA in plant cells is different from DAN in the nucleus and it is related to photosynthesis. Researchers at the University of Advanced Science and Technology in Nara, Japan, noticed that there are two kinds of enzyme genes that are important for photosynthesis in plants. So they tried to replace genes like tobacco with high-activity cyanobacterial photosynthesis-related genes. As a result, the photosynthetic rate of tobacco increased by 70% compared with the original. After 15 weeks, they grew 40% higher than that of normal tobacco, and the starch obtained from photosynthesis increased by 70% as compared with the original. The researchers said that they are using rice and wheat for similar tests, hoping to help increase food production.
