Prevention of Powdery Mildew of Kidney Bean and Kidney Bean

Powdery mildew, caused by the fungus *Erysiphae polygoni* (classified under the subphylum Erysiphe of the Ascomycota phylum), is a widespread plant pathogen that affects over 60 species across 13 different plant families. This obligate parasite exhibits physiological variation and relies on its anamorphic (asexual) stage to infect plants, leading to the formation of conidia, which spread the infection. In the field, the disease primarily targets leaves, causing white, powdery spots composed of spores, conidiophores, and mycelia. These spots can cover entire foliage surfaces, especially when infestation is severe. As the disease progresses, the affected leaves may become yellowed, curled, and eventually fall off, significantly reducing plant health and productivity. The pathogen survives in cold regions through closed, protective structures that remain on the ground during winter. In the following spring, these structures produce ascospores, which are dispersed by wind and initiate new infections. The disease thrives in shady, warm, and humid conditions, while dry environments or weak, poorly grown plants may experience more severe outbreaks. To manage the disease, several fungicides are recommended: 25% triadimefon diluted at 2,000 times, 45% Dakenin WP at 800–1,000 times, 47% Garnett WP at 800 times, 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 1,000 times, and 50% sulfur suspension at 200–300 times. Applications should be made every 7–10 days, with 2–3 treatments typically required for effective control. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential to prevent serious damage.
