UK company launches security equipment to MRI scan room

Release date: 2008-11-20

On October 27, 2008, British company Metrasens Ltd introduced a groundbreaking security system called the Beacon System, designed to detect objects or accessories that could be attracted by MRI magnets. This innovative solution helps distinguish between safe metals and harmful ferromagnetic materials, significantly enhancing safety in MRI environments for both patients and medical staff.
Despite the known risks associated with MRI equipment, many of these dangers are often overlooked. The powerful magnetic fields in MRI scanners can pose serious threats, especially when metallic objects are present. Even soft metals can become dangerous projectiles within the magnetic field, potentially causing severe injuries.
The Beacon System comes in two versions: one wall-mounted and another portable, offering flexibility depending on the hospital's needs. Each model operates in two distinct modes. The first is the Entryway Mode, which is activated before a patient enters the MRI suite, helping to prevent large-scale ejection incidents. The second mode, Pre-screen Mode, is used in waiting areas to detect small metal items that patients may be carrying unintentionally.
The product was showcased at RSNA 2008, marking a significant milestone for the company. Founded in 2005, Metrasens was spun off from QinetiQ, a leading technology developer. The company is led by Dr. Simon Goodyear, who has been instrumental in advancing MRI safety solutions. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
