UK company launches security equipment to MRI scan room

Release date: 2008-11-20

On October 27, 2008, British company Metrasens Ltd announced the launch of its innovative Beacon System—a security solution designed to detect objects or accessories that could be attracted by MRI magnets. This system helps hospitals identify whether materials are safe or potentially dangerous, significantly enhancing safety for patients, medical staff, and equipment during MRI scans.

Despite the known risks associated with MRI machines, many healthcare professionals often overlook these dangers. The strong magnetic fields in MRI scanners can cause metallic objects inside the body to move unexpectedly, posing serious threats. Even soft metals can act as projectiles in the magnetic field, leading to severe injuries.

Metrasens offers two versions of the Beacon System: a wall-mounted model and a portable one, allowing flexibility in placement. Each model has two operational modes. The first is the "Entryway Mode," which is used before a patient enters the MRI room to prevent large-scale ejection incidents. The second mode, "Pre-screen Mode," is ideal for use in waiting areas to detect small metal items that patients might carry on them.

The company will present the Beacon System at RSNA 2008, one of the world’s largest radiology conferences. Founded in 2005, Metrasens was spun off from QinetiQ, a renowned technology developer. The company is led by Dr. Simon Goodyear, who continues to drive innovation in medical safety. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
