It is reported that a team composed of Professor Chimu Shouwu of the Department of Dentistry of Okayama University in Japan has successfully developed an "artificial tongue" that can help the tongue to be removed due to tongue cancer and other reasons, and patients with difficulty in speaking clearly speak. The research team said that the development of movable instruments that can artificially simulate tongue function is the first in the world.
It is understood that humans need to use the tongue to touch the upper jaw when making a sound, but after the tongue is removed, it will cause difficulty in sounding due to the inability to touch the upper jaw. The Japanese research team used a resin for dental treatment to make an artificial tongue of appropriate size based on the shape of the patient's teeth and mouth. It is then attached to the patient's molar with a wire and moved up and down through the residual tongue to contact the upper jaw. In addition, a filling called PAP is used to increase the thickness of the upper jaw, making the artificial tongue more accessible to the upper jaw.
According to the Japan Cancer Treatment Society, in 1975, 2,100 patients were diagnosed with oral cancer in Japan, and by 2005, it had more than tripled to about 6,900. In addition to cancer, there are also cases of loss of tongue due to traffic accidents and work injuries. Professor Mumu of the research team said: "The artificial tongue uses the current dental clinical materials and is simple to make. I hope to provide this technology to medical institutions all over Japan to help more people."
Professor Mumu, can you come to China?
