In recent years, as sea cucumber farming has expanded and production has increased, the quality of seedlings has become a major concern. The Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China has emphasized the importance of establishing an original improved seed system as part of aquaculture development. As a result, the national sea cucumber original seed farm is located in Dalian, specifically in Zhangzidao Town, Changhai County.
This area is known for its rich natural sea cucumber population. The surrounding waters are effectively isolated, with no artificial seedlings introduced. All sea cucumbers here are wild, making the region a prime source for high-quality seedlings. This unique environment has positioned the island as a key supplier of premium sea cucumber stock for the country.
Zhangzi Island lies on latitude 39°, often referred to as the "golden latitude" where marine life thrives due to the perfect balance between cold and warm currents. Many consumers are familiar with the superior quality of sea cucumbers from Zhangzidao, largely due to their location along this ideal latitude.
One distinctive characteristic of sea cucumbers is their "summer dormancy." During the summer months, they burrow into the seabed and stop feeding, remaining inactive until autumn. The seawater temperature ranges from 1°C to 25°C, with an average of 12.1°C. Tidal range varies between 1.5 to 2 meters, with some areas reaching up to 4.5 meters. Salinity averages between 30‰ and 32‰, rich in nutrients. These conditions perfectly match the environment around Zhangzi Island and its surrounding waters.
Sea cucumbers produced in this region have a cylindrical shape, with raised spines on their backs—typically 4 to 6 rows of irregular conical tubercles. Their underbelly is flat, with dense tube feet arranged irregularly. The mouth is located on the ventral side, surrounded by 20 tentacles. Their respiratory system is well-developed, but they lack the Vichy device found in some other species. Their coloration ranges from chestnut brown to gray-green, earning them the nickname "sea ginseng."
