Biogas slurry is a nutrient-rich byproduct that contains essential proteins, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins necessary for pig development. Incorporating it into pig feed can significantly enhance growth rates and improve the economic returns of pig farming. However, it is crucial to use fresh and clean biogas slurry that has been produced for at least 40 days in a properly functioning biogas digester. Before feeding, the slurry should be filtered through a fine mesh to remove any impurities and then evenly mixed into the regular pig feed.
When first introducing biogas slurry to pigs, it's important to "condition" them gradually. This involves placing a bowl with the slurry in the pigpen so the animals can get used to its smell. After 10 to 15 days, mix a small amount of fresh slurry into their feed. Within 3 to 5 days, the pigs should start adapting to the new feed. The recommended feeding amounts vary depending on the pig’s weight:
- For young pigs (20–25 kg), feed 0.3 kg per meal, 4 times daily.
- For growing pigs (25–50 kg), feed 0.6 kg per meal, 3 times daily.
- For fattening pigs (50–100 kg), feed 1 kg per meal, 4 times daily.
When feeding pigs with biogas slurry, several precautions should be taken:
1. Monitor the pigs’ appetite closely. They should eat normally or have a slight surplus, but not overeat.
2. Always obtain the slurry from a biogas digester that has been producing gas for at least 40 days. The ideal pH level of the slurry should be between 6.8 and 7.2.
3. Avoid overfeeding, especially with high concentrations of slurry. Once removed from the digester, let the slurry sit for 1 to 2 hours (1 hour in summer, 2 hours in winter) to allow ammonia to evaporate before feeding.
4. If pigs show signs of diarrhea after being fed biogas slurry, it may indicate an excess of slurry or an unadjusted digestive system. In such cases, reduce or stop feeding for 1–2 days before resuming.
5. Do not feed biogas slurry to pigs weighing less than 20 kg. Sows should not be fed during estrus but can be given slurry after giving birth.
6. When using biogas slurry, do not reduce the amount of concentrated feed provided to the pigs. Maintain a balanced diet to ensure optimal health and growth.
