Excessive wear in the ring groove can also cause the piston ring to twist within its groove. As the engine operates, the twisted ring experiences additional torsional stress, which, combined with bending stress, increases the likelihood of breaking.
Material defects in the piston ring itself can also contribute to failure. Air gaps formed during the casting process or the presence of sand holes can weaken the structure of the ring, making it more prone to cracking or breaking under normal operating conditions.
In two-stroke diesel engines, piston rings are often equipped with locating pins. If the locating pin at the ring's opening becomes damaged, the piston ring may get caught or hang at the intake or exhaust ports. This can lead to uneven stress distribution, potentially causing the piston ring or even the cylinder to break.
Proper maintenance, correct installation, and high-quality materials are essential in preventing these types of failures. Regular inspections of the piston rings, cylinder walls, and ring grooves can help identify early signs of wear or damage before they lead to catastrophic failure.
