Infants, toddlers, and elementary and middle school students are the primary consumers of infant formula. Parents everywhere want their children to grow up smart and healthy. As a result, many milk powder manufacturers have seized on this desire, promoting their products with claims like "rich in DHA and AA" or "helps your child become smarter." But can DHA and AA really work like magic?
According to Yang Zonggong, DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid, while AA refers to arachidonic acid. Formulas that include both DHA and AA are designed to closely mimic the nutritional profile of breast milk, helping infants achieve better physiological development and growth indicators. A study conducted by the Beijing Pediatric Institute Nutrition Research Laboratory compared infants from four major Chinese cities—Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Qingdao. The research followed two groups: one was fed a formula containing DHA and AA, while the other was breastfed. The results showed that infants who could not be breastfed but were given formulas with DHA and AA had developmental outcomes nearly as good as those who were breastfed, especially in terms of height and head circumference.
However, Yang also warned that excessive amounts of DHA and AA can lead to negative side effects. Moreover, children at different ages require different levels of these nutrients. Therefore, the content of DHA and AA in infant formula must strictly comply with regulations set by the State Food and Drug Administration. He emphasized that high-quality domestic brands are just as effective as foreign ones, and the belief that the most expensive milk powder is the best for a child’s brain and body development is not scientifically supported.
In today's market, it's important for parents to make informed choices based on scientific evidence rather than marketing hype. Understanding the real benefits and proper usage of DHA and AA can help ensure that children receive the best possible nutrition without unnecessary expenses.
