Infants, toddlers, and elementary and middle school students are the primary consumers of infant formula. Parents everywhere want their children to be smart, healthy, and well-developed. As a result, many milk powder manufacturers have seized on this desire, promoting their products with claims like "rich in DHA and AA" and "helps make your child smarter." But can these two nutrients truly work like magic?
Yang Zonggong, an expert in nutrition, explains that DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid, while AA refers to arachidonic acid. When added to infant formulas, these components help make the feeding experience closer to breastfeeding, leading to better physiological acceptance and growth outcomes. A study conducted by the Beijing Pediatric Institute Nutrition Research Laboratory tested infants in four major cities—Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Qingdao. The study compared breastfed infants with those who were given formula containing DHA and AA. The results showed that infants who couldn’t breastfeed but were fed DHA- and AA-enriched formulas had development outcomes nearly as good as those who were breastfed, especially in terms of height and head circumference.
However, Yang also warns that excessive amounts of DHA and AA can lead to negative side effects. Moreover, children at different ages require different levels of these nutrients. Therefore, the content of DHA and AA in infant formula must strictly follow regulations set by the State Food and Drug Administration. He further emphasizes that high-quality domestic brands are just as good as foreign ones, and the belief that more expensive formulas automatically mean better brain and body development is not scientifically supported. It's time for parents to look beyond marketing hype and make informed choices based on real science and nutritional guidelines.
