Young children's heart in the chest outside the doctor's successful surgery to help the heart return

Release date: 2007-03-19

A four-year-old boy named Pei Pei, who was born with a rare heart condition, recently underwent a life-changing surgery that returned his heart to its proper place in his chest. For years, he struggled to keep up with other children, unable to jump or run because he feared his heart would "leap out" of his body. His condition was diagnosed as a congenital defect where part of the heart had grown outside the chest, protected only by the skin and not the rib cage.

Pei Pei’s mother first noticed something unusual when she gave birth. A bulge beneath his chest was seen pulsing rhythmically, and doctors later confirmed it was a portion of his heart that had developed outside the sternum. The family was terrified at the time, unsure if their child would survive. Though Pei Pei managed to live, he grew up weaker than other kids, often getting sick and struggling with daily activities.

Over the years, the family sought help from top hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing, but many were unwilling to take on the high-risk procedure. Eventually, they found a team of specialists at a provincial hospital who agreed to perform the complex operation. Dr. Ge Jianjun, one of the surgeons involved, explained that Pei Pei had multiple heart defects, including a ventricular septal defect, an atrial septal defect, and a left ventricular diverticulum — a pouch-like structure that beat along with the heart, causing the visible bulge.

This condition is extremely rare, and the surgery posed significant challenges. No one could be sure if removing the abnormal tissue would harm the heart’s function. After careful planning, the surgical team successfully removed the pouch, repaired the chest wall, and placed the heart back into its correct position. Two weeks after the operation, Pei Pei recovered well and was finally able to go home.

Dr. Ge said that in the future, Pei Pei should lead a normal life, able to play, learn, and grow like any other child. His story highlights the importance of medical innovation and the courage of families who never give up hope. —— Information from: Jianghuai Morning News

Emulsifying Agent

Emulsifiers are a type of substance that can form a stable emulsion from the mixture of two or more insoluble components. The working principle is that during the emulsification process, the dispersed phase is dispersed in the form of micro droplets (micrometer level) in the continuous phase. The emulsifier reduces the interfacial tension of each component in the mixed system and forms a relatively strong thin film on the surface of the micro droplets or forms a double layer on the surface of the micro droplets due to the charge provided by the emulsifier, preventing the aggregation of micro droplets and maintaining a uniform emulsion.
