Four-year-old Pei Pei, a child from Huai Shang District, had always struggled to keep up with his peers. Unlike other kids, he couldn’t jump or run freely—his fear was that his heart might “jump out†of his body. It turned out that Pei Pei was born with a rare condition: his heart had grown outside his chest, not protected by the sternum. Recently, after a successful heart surgery at a provincial hospital, doctors managed to return his heart to its proper place.
When Pei Pei was born, his mother noticed a bulge beneath his chest that beat regularly. Doctors later identified it as a heart mass that had developed outside the rib cage. The family was terrified at first, fearing their child might not survive. But Pei Pei defied the odds and lived, though he grew slower than other children. He often got sick and had difficulty moving around.
Over the years, the family sought help from top hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai, but many doctors refused to perform the surgery due to the high risk involved. Eventually, they found hope at a provincial hospital where a team of skilled surgeons took on the challenge.
Dr. Ge Jianjun, one of the lead surgeons, explained that Pei Pei was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition: a ventricular septal defect, an atrial septal defect, and a left ventricular diverticulum. This meant that part of his heart had formed a sac-like structure that moved with each heartbeat, creating the visible bulge on his chest.
Such cases are extremely rare, and the operation was highly complex. No one could be sure if removing the sac would affect the heart’s function. However, the medical team carefully planned the procedure, successfully removing the abnormal tissue, repairing the split sternum, and returning the heart to its correct position inside the chest.
After two weeks of recovery and close monitoring, Pei Pei was finally discharged. Dr. Ge said that the child would soon be able to play, run, and live a normal life without any restrictions. His story is a testament to modern medicine’s ability to overcome even the most challenging conditions.
