Smiles, also known as banana blossoms or smiling flowers, are a unique type of ornamental plant. When the flowers are partially open, they often droop slightly, giving them a look that resembles both a smile and a frown. These plants are widely appreciated in Chinese gardens for their beauty and elegance.
In terms of propagation, cuttings are the most common method, although grafting, sowing, and layering can also be used. Cuttings are typically taken in June, using one-year-old branches that are 8 to 10 cm long, with 2 to 3 leaves left on each cutting. The soil for the cutting bed should be well-draining, such as sandy loam or peat-based mix. After planting, the soil should be compacted and watered thoroughly, and shade nets should be placed over the beds to maintain moisture and reduce direct sunlight. Grafting is usually done in mid-March to late March, using rootstocks like purple magnolia or yellow orchid. For sowing, seeds can be planted in November, and potted seedlings can be moved outdoors after the spring thaw. Seedlings typically emerge in late May, and shading should be provided during this period. Layering can be done in early May, and by early July, the new roots will have developed. By mid-September, the new plants can be separated from the mother plant and transplanted.
When it comes to cultivation, these plants thrive in southern regions when planted directly in the ground, while northern gardeners often grow them in pots. When transplanting, it's important to keep the root ball intact, and the best time for this is from mid-March to mid-April. Potted plants require a slightly acidic, well-aerated, and nutrient-rich soil. It's recommended to repot them once a year and ensure good air circulation. From May to September, applying a diluted acid fertilizer monthly helps promote healthy growth. In winter, the plants should be moved indoors or into greenhouses, and returned outside once the weather warms up in spring.
By following these techniques, you can enjoy the beautiful blooms of smiles throughout the seasons, whether in your garden or on your balcony. With proper care and attention, these plants can become a stunning addition to any space.
