Gold Leafhopper

Scientific name: Caryopteris clandonensis 'Worcester Gold'

Family: Verbenaceae

Category: Shrubs

Morphological Characteristics:

This compact shrub typically grows to a height of 50–60 cm, featuring cylindrical branches. The leaves are opposite, wedge-shaped, measuring 3–6 cm in length, with smooth, glossy surfaces. They have a pointed tip and an obtusely rounded base, with coarsely serrated edges. The inflorescences are cymes, bearing blue-purple, salverform flowers that bloom from the bottom up on axillary clusters. The calyx is bell-shaped, two-lipped, with the lower lobe being larger and more thinly branched. There are four stamens, and all floral parts—corolla, stamens, and pistil—are light blue. Flowering occurs from July through September.

This plant is easy to grow and maintain, making it a great addition to any garden. Its elegant golden foliage stands out beautifully against other colors, making it an excellent choice for landscaping and ornamental purposes.

Origin and Distribution:

Caryopteris clandonensis 'Worcester Gold' is well-suited for cultivation in northern, northwestern, northeastern, and central regions of China. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade as well.

Growth Habits:

This shrub is highly adaptable, tolerating drought, heat, and cold conditions. It can survive winter temperatures as low as -20°C. The intensity of its golden foliage depends on environmental conditions—more sunlight and drier weather lead to brighter yellow leaves. However, prolonged exposure to semi-shade may cause the leaves to turn yellowish-green. One important note: this plant is sensitive to overwatering. Excess moisture can lead to root rot, causing brown discoloration and eventual plant death. Therefore, proper drainage and careful watering are essential for its health.

Ornamental Uses:

With its striking blue-purple flowers and long flowering period from late summer to early autumn, this shrub provides vibrant color for 2–3 months. It's ideal for summer and autumn gardens, requiring minimal care. Regular pruning during the growing season encourages more vibrant yellow foliage. It’s perfect for large-scale planting, bordering lawns, rock gardens, water features, or roadside landscapes. Its beauty and resilience make it a valuable addition to any garden setting.
