Pingyin County, located in Shandong Province, has a long history of rose cultivation dating back to the Ming Dynasty. The roses produced here are known as the "representative of traditional Chinese roses" due to their large petals, rich colors, and strong fragrance. As the main origin of roses in China, Pingyin is officially recognized as the "Hometown of Chinese Roses" by the State Forestry Administration and the Chinese Flower Association. Beyond its ornamental value, Pingyin roses hold significant economic importance and have earned numerous national and international awards. In 2003, they were designated as a protected geographical product, and are now a nationally promoted premium variety.
What makes Pingyin roses unique is their exceptional natural environment. Nestled at the foot of Tui Ping Mountain, surrounded by hills and near the Yudai River, the area features a long, narrow valley with a mild climate. Winters and early springs bring sufficient rain and snow, which greatly benefits rose growth. From germination to the start of flowering, temperatures gradually rise, while the flowering period experiences less rain and ample sunlight. This combination of terrain, climate, and soil contributes to the rich fragrance and quality of Pingyin roses. By 2006, the county had expanded its rose planting area to 2,000 hectares. In 2005, with market guidance, local rose processing households introduced new refining equipment, increasing annual flower processing capacity to 2,600 tons.
Traditionally, Pingyin roses are divided into three main varieties: single red roses, which have a single bloom, strong aroma, and seeds but low yield; bao roses, which remain unopened and are used for medicinal purposes; and double red roses, known for their large, fragrant blooms, thick petals, and wide diameter—up to 8 cm with individual flowers weighing up to 6 grams. These are the primary varieties cultivated today. Over the past 40 years, the Pingyin Rose Research Institute has developed ten hybrid varieties (Pingyin No. 1 to No. 10) through sexual crossbreeding, all maintaining the traditional fragrance and characteristics such as vibrant color and long blooming periods. Additionally, the institute has collected over 40 domestic and international rose varieties, including the Bulgarian White Rose, Russian Perfume No. 1–3, Beijing Miaofeng Red Rose, Sichuan Meimei, Gansu Bi Shui Rose, and many more. In 2004, space breeding technology was successfully applied for the first time in rose production, promising the development of new and improved varieties.
For propagation, Pingyin roses are commonly grown using methods such as cuttings, layering, rooting, and grafting. Among these, grafting is the most widely used due to its simplicity, efficiency, and long-lasting results. Planting is typically done in spring, summer, or autumn, depending on the season and conditions. Spring planting occurs before the ground thaws, while summer planting takes place during the growing season, often during rainy periods when the soil is moist. Autumn planting usually happens from mid-October to early November.
Today, Pingyin roses are processed into a wide range of products, including rose wine, rose cream, rose sauce, rose tea, rose oil, rose oral liquid, bath roses, and rose cell extract. These products highlight the versatility and cultural significance of this iconic flower.
