Plant Characteristics:
A perennial evergreen herb known for its striking, patterned leaves. The plant has underground rhizomes that produce upright stems with a sheath at the base. The leaves feature unique, iridescent patterns resembling peacock feathers, with dark purple petioles. In the evening, the leaves may curl slightly, giving the appearance of resting, and they will unfurl again when exposed to light.
Flowering:
While it is primarily grown for its foliage, the Peacock Plant can produce small, inconspicuous flowers during the summer and autumn months. The flowers are typically not showy and are often overlooked in favor of the plant’s beautiful leaves.
Native Habitat:
Originally from the rainforests of Brazil, this plant thrives in warm, humid conditions.
Growth Habits:
It prefers high humidity (70-80%) and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. It does not tolerate cold and should be kept above 5°C during winter. Temperatures above 35°C or below 10°C can be harmful.
Propagation:
Calathea makoyana is commonly propagated through rhizome division. This is best done in late spring or early summer when the temperature is around 20°C. When dividing, use a sharp knife to cut the rhizomes so that each section has 2–3 buds and strong roots. After cutting, place the divisions in a cool, shaded area for about a week before gradually introducing them to indirect light. Keep the soil moist initially, and water thoroughly once new roots develop.
Cultivation and Care:
Use a well-draining, loose soil mix rich in organic matter, such as a combination of leaf mold, peat, and river sand, with a small amount of decomposed fertilizer added. During the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist and mist the leaves regularly to maintain humidity, especially in summer and autumn. Reduce watering in fall to help the plant prepare for winter. Fertilize every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer, but avoid excessive nitrogen, which can damage the foliage. Provide shade or partial shade during May to September to prevent leaf tip burn and maintain the plant’s vibrant coloration.
Pests and Diseases:
Peacock plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases, but poor ventilation and dry air can lead to infestations of scale insects. To prevent this, you can spray the plant with a 1500-fold dilution of Dimethoate.
