Pingyin County in Shandong Province has a long history of cultivating roses, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. The roses produced by local companies are renowned as the "representative of traditional Chinese roses" due to their large, thick petals, vibrant colors, and strong fragrance. Pingyin is officially recognized as the "Hometown of Chinese Roses" by the State Forestry Administration and the Chinese Flower Association. Not only do these roses have high economic value, but they also hold great ornamental appeal. Over the years, Pingyin roses have earned numerous national and international awards. In 2003, they were granted protected origin status by the government, and they are now a nationally promoted and premium variety. What makes Pingyin roses unique is the region's favorable natural conditions. Located at the foot of Tsui Ping Mountain, Pingyin is surrounded by mountains and lies near the Yudai River. The area features a long, narrow valley with a mild climate. Winters and early springs bring ample rain and snow, which are ideal for rose growth. From germination to the start of blooming, temperatures gradually rise, while the flowering period sees less rain and plenty of sunlight. These special geographical features, combined with the unique soil and climate, contribute to the rich fragrance and quality of Pingyin roses. By 2006, the county had expanded its rose cultivation to 2,000 hectares. In 2005, under market guidance, local processing units introduced advanced refining equipment, increasing annual flower processing capacity to 2,600 tons. Traditionally, Pingyin roses are divided into three main types: first, the single red rose, known for its single bloom, fragrance, and seeds. Due to its low yield, it is mainly used for seed preservation. Second, the bud-type roses, which remain unopened and are cultivated for medicinal purposes. Third, the double red roses, characterized by large, fragrant blooms with thick petals, reaching up to 8 cm in diameter and weighing up to 6 grams. This variety dominates commercial production. Over 40 years of research, the Pingyin Rose Research Institute has developed ten hybrid varieties (from No. 1 to No. 10) through crossbreeding. Most of these new varieties retain the classic fragrance of traditional Pingyin roses, along with larger blooms and longer flowering periods. Additionally, the institute has collected over 40 domestic and international rose varieties, including the Bulgarian White Rose, Russian Perfume No. 1, Beijing Miaofeng Mountain Red Rose, Sichuan Meimei, Gansu Bitter Water Rose, and others. In 2004, space breeding technology was successfully applied for the first time in rose cultivation, paving the way for new and improved varieties. Propagation methods for Pingyin roses include ramet propagation, burying, rooting, and grafting. Among these, grafting is the most widely used due to its simplicity, efficiency, and long-lasting success rate. Rose planting is typically done in spring, summer, or autumn. Spring planting occurs before the ground thaws, while summer planting takes place during the growing season, often using rainy days when the soil is moist. Autumn planting usually happens between mid-October and early November. Today, Pingyin roses are used in a wide range of products, including rose wine, rose cream, rose sauce, rose tea, rose oil, rose oral liquid, bath roses, and rose cell extract. These products highlight the versatility and value of this iconic flower.
