Pigs need a comfortable and healthy living environment to grow strong and stay dry. To achieve this, farmers often use three key materials in the pig house: straw, dry sand, and red clay. These natural elements work together to create an ideal habitat for pigs.
Straw is commonly used in open-style pig houses, especially in rural areas where insulation is poor. Farmers lay down wheat straw, hay, or rice straw inside the house. These materials are soft, dry, and provide good insulation. When pigs lie on them, they feel warm and safe, which helps improve their overall well-being.
Dry sand is another important component. It has excellent moisture-absorbing properties and helps keep the floor dry. By covering the floor with fine sand, humidity levels in the pig house are reduced, creating a drier and warmer environment. This not only prevents dampness but also helps maintain a higher temperature, which is beneficial for the pigs' health.
Red clay plays a special role in preventing iron deficiency in pigs. When pigs lie on the ground for long periods, they may not get enough iron from their food. Pigs on cement floors are especially at risk. Red clay is rich in trace elements, including iron. By allowing pigs to come into contact with red clay—especially through their mouths—it helps prevent deficiencies and supports better growth and immunity.
The bedding method involves mixing these three materials in specific proportions. Straw is cut to about 6–8 cm in length, and the mix ratio is typically 5 parts straw, 3 parts sand, and 2 parts red clay. After mixing, the bedding is spread evenly across the floor of the pig house. This system keeps the area dry and warm, reduces the spread of diseases, and improves the comfort of the pigs. The soft texture of the bedding also makes it easier for farmers to manage and adjust, ensuring that pigs feel relaxed and happy. This simple yet effective approach is worth trying for any pig farmer looking to improve animal welfare and health. (Zheng Yanping, Animal Husbandry Bureau of Dongping County, Shandong Province)
