Adding fat to sows can increase the survival rate of piglets

A study conducted by the Institute of Animal Husbandry in Kansas, USA, revealed that incorporating certain types of fats into the diet of sows can significantly improve piglet survival rates and enhance their growth. During the experiment, 5% vegetable oil was added to the feed of the experimental group of sows, starting from the first half of the month. The results were impressive—100% of the piglets from the experimental group survived, compared to just 90% in the control group. Additionally, for the two-week-old piglets, 2% to 2.5% vegetable oil was included in their diet. This adjustment led to an 8.2% increase in daily weight gain when compared to the control group. These findings highlight the potential benefits of dietary fat supplementation in improving both reproductive outcomes and postnatal development in pigs. Such research provides valuable insights for farmers looking to optimize livestock management and boost productivity.
